ROLEPLAY GUIDELINES Empty ROLEPLAY GUIDELINES

on Thu May 09, 2019 3:02 am
The following guidelines will help you understand how best to roleplay on this forum. If you have any questions or are confused about anything, don't hesitate to post in the questions and answers thread, or message a moderator/admin.

THIS IS A LONG - FORM LITERARY ROLEPLAY FORUM

This means posts should be in paragraph form, and be grammatically considerate. We don't expect perfection, and understand that not everyone is an English Major, but we do expect people to put some effort into their posts. Try and describe your characters actions or their reaction to their surrounding, perhaps their inner dialogue. Not all posts must be a whole paragraph (or more) but do your best to avoid single line responses, as they leave little for your fellow roleplayers to go with.

OPEN AND CLOSED ROLEPLAYS

If your thread is available to be joined by anyone put [OPEN] in the title so people know they can hop in.
If your thread is closed, put [CLOSED] and preferably the characters involved in the thread
Remember, even if your thread is closed, other people might still read it, so try to be considerate of this fact.

NO GOD MODING

You don't determine what happens to other peoples characters. Try to offer actions, and let your fellow roleplayers respond. Instead of:

"X punches Y right in the face" write, "X swings a mighty fist at Y's face."

Remember, this isn't a competition, it's a collaborative storytelling effort. Things are more interesting when your character only succeeds some of the time. This opens new pathways you may not have considered. That said, don't use this rule as an excuse to make your character untouchable, should conflict occur. Be realistic about their capabilities (are they athletic? were they expecting the blow?) and try to mix it up.

If you're not sure, just talk to your fellow roleplayers and talk about what could or should happen! Or if you want it to be random or unexpected, ask an admin/mod to determine the outcome for you.

TRY AND FOLLOW THE IMPROV PRINCIPLE OF ACTION

There is a loose rule in theatre sports and improvisational acting that basically says 'roll with the action, don't block it.' If someone suggests that you look in the fridge, don't say 'I'm not hungry' without offering an alternative path forwards. Roleplay needs a direction to move, and if your fellow roleplayers try to set up a direction, try not to shut it down.

Not all of the rules in this link are related but it can give a general idea of what this means, Improv and roleplay have a lot in common, and we can learn a lot from established theatre principles:

IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN-

Or require a bit of Game mastering to help set or progress the scene, don't hesitate to let an admin/moderator know! We are happy to step in and provide additional conflicts or resolutions, or just let you know how the world works if you're unsure. This is a fantasy setting after all, so some things can be unclear.
